明代霁蓝最为后人称道的首推宣德一朝。宣德霁蓝釉瓷器多为单一色釉，也有少部分刻画暗花的，另有蓝釉白花的，多为折枝花及鱼藻纹。官窑款有青花和暗款两种。均为“大明宣德年制”双行六字楷书款，凡四字款者，均为后仿。宣德霁蓝釉主要有以下特征：
1、里外满施蓝釉和里白釉外蓝釉者并存。
2、碗、盘口沿“灯草边”整齐者少，多数线条弯曲，不规整。
3、圈足施釉到底，平视不足圈足露胎。
4、浅刻花纹多为龙纹，白花者龙纹少见，且白花均是用堆塑法制作，为突起的立体花纹，但观望时，似无立体感。
5、造型碗、盘常见，瓶、壶传世品中少见。
均有精品传世。有刻暗花纹的，也有描金彩的，常见造型仍是宫廷祭器和陈设用瓷。官窑霁蓝釉瓷多有官款，且做工十分精细，民窑也有霁蓝釉瓷多是庙堂所用的祭器，以炉、瓶最多，均无官款，但有年纪年款的。

瓶、尊等琢器颈肩部常附加各种装饰性的双耳，除有一定实用性外，还有装饰作用，便器物趋于平衡协调，同时也增添了器物的美感，时代特征鲜明，有象耳、鸠耳、螭耳，戟耳、如意耳、夔龙耳、铺方耳、牺耳、贯耳、蝙蝠耳等。装饰双耳的工艺技法影响了乾隆时期以后各朝的器物。象与“吉祥”的“祥”谐音，是国运昌盛的吉祥之兆，民间传说太平盛世出白象。象寓有“太平有象”之意。
