关于玻璃陨石的成因现已探明，它是某种石陨石高速陨落时融化后的产物。虽然如今大多数科学家认为是巨大的陨石或彗星(核)撞击地球，使地球表面物质熔融，溅射到空中，急速冷却而成。但是直到目前为止，对澳亚区和北美区的玻璃陨石群，并未找到相应的陨石坑，因此地球熔融物的说法是不正确的。全世界的科学家并没有真正研究过中国区的玻璃陨石，所以，中国区的玻璃陨石做为一种新生的物品并没有引起科研界的重视。从全球范围来看，玻璃陨石代表了曾经发生在地球的许多次较大的陨石雨事件，也很有可能是引发地球生命危机的成因。
