正面是汉族和蒙古族男子头像，左边是“凤凰牡丹”。凤凰是中国传说中的神鸟，有“百鸟之王”的美称。《史记》记载：“四海之内，感戴舜功，兴九韶之乐而凤凰翔天下”。《说文解字》内称：“出于东方君子之国，见则天下大安宁”。凤凰出现是国泰民安吉祥之兆。牡丹则是中国的名花，唐代诗人李正封有“国色朝酣酒，天香夜染衣”之句，将牡丹誉为“国色天香”花中之魁。币背为珠穆琅玛峰图。珠峰位于喜玛拉雅山之中部，海拔8844.43米（2005年测量新高度），像座巨型金字塔耸立在群峰之上，气势不凡，景象壮观。为世界第一高山，也是世界上任何山峰都无法相比的。
