湖北省造币厂是继广东造币厂之后，较早自铸银币的省份之一。昔时两广总督张之洞在建设广东造币厂之后奉旨转督两湖，于光绪十九年（公元1893年）奏准在湖北武昌设立造币厂，所制银币的图案与广东七钱二分银币相仿。乾隆时曾开铸镌有班禅头像的纪念性银币，道光元年（1821）鼓铸了犒赏用的银币，但用机械自铸新式银元则始于光绪八年（1882）吉林机械局铸造的厂平（吉林通用银两）一两币，因铸造数目甚少，后世有数，时市面流通的银币主要是洋钱。两广总督张之洞于十三年（1887年）奏准由广东造币厂试铸，正面铸有“光绪元宝”4字，上圈有“广东省造”4字，下圈有“库平七钱二分”6字，反面镌有龙形及一串英文，越二三年铸成，在市面流通，是为龙洋的起源。
我国清代银圆虽然制造时间不长，可是有许多珍品币撒播，这些难得一见的藏品，在近年的拍卖市场中却屡有泛起，如：浙江省造“光绪元宝”库平七钱二分银圆，2004年拍卖成交价为27.5万元。湖北省造库平银一两光绪元宝：光绪二十九年(公元1903年)铸，孤品，现藏台湾鸿禧美术馆，1991年6月在古玩文化艺术品交易拍卖会上以18.7万美元落槌，现市场估价150-200万元人民币。陕西省造库平七钱二分光绪元宝：光绪二十五年(公元1899年)铸，市场估价为30-50万元人民币。窗体顶端

龙洋大珍—湖北“本省”七银二分湖北“本省”银元湖北“本省”银元的制成日期与发行理由，在一般文献上都找不到具体记载，因此目前各书谱的说法均缺乏确凿依据。然2005年上海博物馆研究员周祥先生在上海《钱币博览》（总46期）发表考证，在一张湖北官钱局光绪廿三年六月发出之“九八制钱一千文”钱票的背面文字查出印有光绪廿二年四月初二日（1896年5月14日）湖广总督告谕：“……既准完纳本省公款，必须加铸本省字样，方免混淆滋弊。……兹议定每新铸之本省银元准作制钱一千文，该商民等照此价赴局购买，即照此价赴关卡州县完纳，无丝毫增减以昭大信。一面增购机器添铸对开、五开、十开、二十开小银元亦加铸本省字样，其价照一千文以次递减，亦如制钱之可以零星使用。”至此，本省银元来龙去脉完全揭晓。由钱票背文之告示日期及“新铸之本省银元……增购机器添铸小银元亦加铸本省字样”等句，可确定系于该年初所制，而非在光绪廿一年湖北银元局开铸初期所造的。至少在其告谕日期前，已铸成加本省字样的壹元。其加上本省字样原意是必须使用此湖北省造的银元纳税，目的是推广湖北银元以间接抵制外地与外洋所造银元，并抑制银钱的兑价，而非只能在湖北省使用。再根据《张之洞全集》卷内之《推广行用银元及银元票示》：“外府各属州县 ……必缘距省遥远，商民人等来省兑取不易，致未通行。”等记载，显然只有邻近省城的州县才见使用。另据1896年10月2日英文报纸《华洋通闻》（The Celestial Empire）报导：“虽然总督坚持每银元兑换制钱一千文，但此时市价银元只合制钱八百五十文，故无人收受，而充当军饷发放的银元也很快回笼……”云云。由此亦可佐证当时制钱缺乏，商民不愿以一千文高价向银元局购用本省银元纳税，当局告谕形同具文。本省银元在窒碍难行的状态下很快便退出流通并被销毁重铸，留存至今者寥寥无几。银元加铸本省字样的应有五种，目前仅见壹元、二角及一角三种。
