在车轮毂里面装设二个半圆型的刹车片，利用“杠杆原理”推动刹车片使刹车片与轮鼓内面接触而发生摩擦。

鼓式刹车应用在汽车上面已经近一世纪的历史了，但是由于它的可靠性以及强大的制动力，使得鼓式刹车现今仍配置在许多车型上 (多使用于后轮)。鼓式刹车是藉由液压将装置于刹车鼓内之刹车片往外推，使刹车片与随着车轮转动的刹车鼓之内面发生摩擦，而产生刹车的效果。

简单的说，鼓式刹车就是利用刹车鼓内静止的刹车片，去摩擦随着车轮转动的刹车鼓，以产生摩擦力使车轮转动速度降低的刹车装置。

在踩下刹车踏板时，脚的施力会使刹车总泵内的活塞将刹车油往前推去并在油路中产生压力。压力经由刹车油传送到每个车轮的刹车分泵活塞，刹车分泵的活塞再推动刹车片向外，使刹车片与刹车鼓的内面发生摩擦，并产生足够的摩擦力去降低车轮的转速，以达到刹车的目的。
When the brake pedal is pressed, the force exerted by the foot will cause the piston in the brake master cylinder to push the brake oil forward and generate pressure in the oil circuit. The pressure is transmitted to the brake cylinder piston of each wheel through the brake oil, and the piston of the brake cylinder pushes the brake pad outward to make the brake pad rub with the inner surface of the brake drum, and generate enough friction to reduce the speed of the wheel, so as to achieve the purpose of braking.
