输入单元接收来自用户设备的各种控制信号，如限位开关、操作按钮、选择开关、行程开关以及其他一些传感器的信号。通过接口电路将这些信号转换成中央处理器能够识别和处理的信号，并存到输入映像寄存器。运行时CPU从输入映像寄存器读取输入信息并进行处理，将处理结果存放到输出映像寄存器。
为防止各种干扰信号和高电压信号进入PLC，影响其可靠性或造成设备损坏，现场输入接口电路一般由光电耦合电路进行隔离。光电耦合电路的关键器件是光耦合器，一般由发光二极管和光电三极管组成。
