商代铜镜的考古资料并不多见,除河南安阳的商代晚期墓葬中先后出土有6面铜镜外,加上各地陆续发现的一些商代铜镜,迄今所知的商代铜镜尚不足10件。因此,高阿申先生捐赠的这面商代晚期青铜镜弥足珍贵。
到了战国时期,中国古代铜镜已进入生长的成熟期,但早期铜镜一直是王公贵族享用的奢侈品,有着一定的级别限制。进入汉代,随着经济的生长,铜镜走进寻常黎民家,反映在铜镜的纹饰上,社会生涯类纹饰大量泛起。到了唐代,国家强盛、经济文化空前繁荣,铜镜生长到了全盛阶段。
拍卖会上,铜镜现身的次数多了起来,少则几十件,多则上百件,且都能拍出不菲的价钱,成为艺术市场上独具特色的珍藏门类。如在2011年上海古玩盈聚交易中央秋拍铜镜专场拍卖会上,有160面古铜镜参拍,总成交额高达4487.6万元,其中的7729号拍品,一面“汉代四乳神兽镜”经由众多买家强烈的角逐,最终竟以908.5万元的天价成交,并一举创下古铜镜拍卖成交纪录。
