当年,四羊方尊被收缴后并没有“慎重保存”,而是放到了时任湖南省政府主席张治中的办公桌上。《国宝档案》书里说：“据传,‘四羊方尊’被送到湖南省政府后,张治中将军对其爱不释手,曾一度放置在他办公室的几案上,可没放几天,就迫于舆论压力转送湖南省银行,进行严密保管。”
在这国家一级文物的身上,印证了商周时期（公元前一千六百年至公元前二百二十一年）青铜器器形与动物形象浑然一体的特点,四羊方尊又以其方形器身、三十四公斤的器重,力压三羊尊、双羊尊及四羊首瓿,成为存世罕见的羊尊青铜器的极致之作。
方尊上最引人注目的装饰,当属位于肩部四角的卷角羊头,“四羊方尊”便是由此得名。羊头与羊颈伸出于器外,羊身与羊腿则附着于方尊腹部及圈足上。方尊上装饰着精美的纹饰,羊的前胸及颈背部布满鳞纹,两侧饰有长冠凤纹,圈足上是夔纹。方尊雄浑厚重,却又不失端庄典雅,是辉煌青铜时代的杰出代表。
这批文物的来源充满传奇色彩。其中九镶带钩和漆器号称来自蓝衣社的一次暗杀行动,而四羊方壶的拥有者则可能是20世纪20年代河南出土,后被国民党军官带到台湾的文物
