从史籍来看,葡萄是汉武帝派张骞出使西域时带回中国引种成功的,当时的丝织物上就出现了葡萄花纹。唐代瑞兽葡萄镜的出现表明了当时已大量种植葡萄并盛行以其饰纹,手工艺匠人们把汉代铜镜流行的瑞兽纹饰与葡萄纹巧妙地结合在一起,突破了传统的规矩格局,创造出了活泼、开放、富于变化和具有神秘色彩的装饰图案,从而揭开了唐代铜镜以花鸟为主题纹饰的序幕。
民国以前的铜镜收藏,可从文献中看到,上至宋徽宗、清乾隆帝,下至历代收藏家罗振玉、陈介琪、刘体智、梁上椿等人,都将其视为心爱之物,无不庆幸中华民族有青铜镜这样的艺术瑰宝。但近40年铜镜的命运,我是见证人。我接触铜镜是三十多年前的事了。儿时在北京南城居住,闲暇时到琉璃厂文物商店看看,被铜镜纹饰所吸引。
海兽葡萄镜,又称瑞兽葡萄镜、狻猊葡萄镜。这种脱胎于狮子造型,经过神话了的瑞兽,由于来之异域,因此被称为海外之兽,简称海兽。海兽与葡萄纹相结合的图案,被寓义：强健有力,硕果累累。据出土资料,海兽葡萄镜最早出现在隋朝,盛行在武则天、唐中宗时期。以后则少见。镜的直径,一般多见于10cm左右。20cm以上属于大型镜。
