瑞兽铭带十二生肖镜是传世或出土的隋代初唐铜镜中体量、制作最精的一种,颇值得关注。目前年代明确的以《宣和博古图》收录的武德五年(622)纪年镜为最早,其内区为四神,可视为瑞兽的一种。与之相似的铜镜在陕西、河南、湖南、广西等地的墓葬中都有出土,但整体数量并不多,墓葬时代明确的均为初唐时期。这些铜镜的尺寸重量、空间布局、纹饰内容搭配基本相同,只在内、外区具体纹饰以及镜铭内容上存在一些差异。

2008年秋拍,中国嘉德的铜镜专场中一件元代《缠枝花卉镜》估价55至今70万,就拍出了100.8万元。事实上当时的价格在今天来看依旧是“地板价”,2014年8月,香港盈聚的一面“唐代瑞兽葡萄花鸟镜”因铸造工艺精湛,又是王公贵族所用,最后经过激烈的角逐以428.6万元高价成交。
