通高35.2厘米,肩宽26.1厘米,刃宽34.8厘米。此钺钺身较宽,刃微胡,整体形制刃宽大于肩宽,方内短窄,上有一长方穿,平肩上有两长方穿。这件人面铜钺1966年出土于山东益都苏埠屯一号大墓,现藏山东省博物馆。同出的人面钺共有两件,这是其中铸有铭文的一件,钺长32.7厘米,刃宽34.5厘米,肩宽23.3厘米,钺身作镂空人面纹,眉、瞳、鼻突起,狰狞可怖。刃角外侈,在正背两面的人面形口部的两侧,各有一个“亚醜”铭记,铭文左为正写,右为反书,因此,该人面铜钺又叫亚醜钺。
钺是一种横击的兵器,与柄横装,内可嵌入柄中,用绳索通过闌上二穿与柄结扎,它在古兵器中属于“劈兵”。钺本作戉,其器形来源于斧。《说文》：“戉,斧也。”斧之大者可专名为钺。《左传·昭公十五年》：“戚钺、秬鬯。”贾公彦疏：“戚钺……俱是斧也,盖钺大而斧小。”有别于一般斧的钺早在新石器时代就出现了,那时的钺多是玉质的,和同时的石斧相比,它们体大而薄,琢磨精细,良渚文化和凌家滩文化出土较多。商周时期青铜器出现,又有铜质的钺。西周以后钺就极少见了。
钺由新石器时代作为复合生产工具的穿孔石斧演变而来。斧用于战斗后,人们便将它的刃部放大,名之为钺,“钺者,大刃之斧也”。钺还有另一特殊用途,即作为王权的象征物。早期甲骨文字中,“王”字的象形颇像钺之形,王字下面一横写作月牙形,像钺之刃口。《史记-周本纪》载,周武王“左杖黄钺,右秉白旄”,向纣王兴师问罪,纣王战败后,周武王用铜钺斩下纣王头颅,悬于白旗之上。
