,夜明珠在我国古代民间又名叫“夜光壁”、夜光石”、“放光石”,相传是世界上极为罕见的夜间能发出强烈光芒的奇宝。英国著名学者李约瑟在其巨著《中国科学技术史》中记载,古代中国人喜爱叙利亚产的夜明珠,它别名为“孔雀暖玉”。据说,印度一些人把夜明珠称为“蛇眼石”。据日本宝石学家玲木敏于1916年在他编纂的《宝石志》中记载,日本的夜明珠是一种特殊的红色水晶,被誉为“神圣的宝石”。
尔后又发现,发光黄石在紫外线照射下,变成淡绿色萤光,未经照射的萤石则发出浅蓝、浅紫到深紫色夜光。二位工程师这次收集到的会发光的萤石颗粒较小,只有5至6毫米,颗粒尚不够理想,要获得可制成大颗粒圆珠的矿物还有待今后继续寻找。虽然这次发现的夜间自行发光的萤石还不是古代的传说的夜明珠,但却为今后寻找夜明殊这一极罕见的无价之宝提供了重要线索。
如今市面上的夜明珠的种类也有很多,价格也层次不齐,但是多为人工合成的,与太然夜明珠的价格更是天壤之别。那么,像盈聚拍卖公司收藏的这枚既是天然矿物又来自“外太空”的“外星”夜明珠实属罕见,不管是从陨石的角度,还是夜明珠的角度来看,还是将其二者相结合其价值实为可观,且仍有逐年上升之势。同时,这种陨石夜明珠也极具科研价值,科学家们现在正通过这种罕见的矿物质来研究外星球的元素组成,并想从中探究是否有生命存在的迹象。有陨石专家说：“经过研究,有的陨石一旦挑战我们人类的理论极限,那价值就无法估量了!”
