明代名医李时珍也在《本草纲目》中称：海南沉香一片万钱冠绝天下!然据古籍记载由于过量砍伐采挖冠绝于天下的海南奇楠香在清代的后期几乎已绝枯。清代著名诗人屈大均游经海南岛对海南沉香情有独钟。他在《广东新语》中不惜笔墨记录海南采香盛况并说：“欲求名材香块者必于海之南也。”
